Courtney Bell

I remember the first time I heard about Courtney Bell; it was during a marathon phone conversation with Detroit’s Filthy Rockwell as he prepped the Filthy America album. He eagerly introduced me to Courtney and his track “Behold a Pale Horse,” which immediately struck a chord with me. Courtney’s lyrical content and delivery piqued my interest, showcasing his undeniable talent. Little did I know our paths would intersect years later for an illuminating interview at Heaven Studios.

It was a crisp fall Saturday morning in Detroit, and I buzzed the door to Heaven Studios. Street Lord Juan greeted me in typical Detroit fashion, “Whatupdoe,” phone to his ear, wearing sweats and a white t-shirt, reminding me to lock the door behind me.

As I made my way down the hall and entered one of the many studios, Juan and I set up shop and discussed strategy and our interview schedule; Courtney Bell was arriving at noon for an in-depth interview.

It was an exciting moment for me, Courtney was making waves in the city, and his visibility was increasing. Courtney isn’t a regular artist he’s stamped by one of Detroit’s OG’s, Royce Da 5’9″. In a genre often criticized for its lack of substance, Courtney brings something different to the culture: humility, thoughtfulness, and therapy are topics he speaks about when you listen to his records.

After sitting down with Courtney for a few hours, I understood who he was, and he even taught me a few things about consciousness and religion.

Courtney reminded me of a time traveler who isn’t supposed to be here, stuck between two worlds, trapped on earth to spread his energy, protected by ancestral spirits.

Courtney’s music is overflowing with reflection; it transcends mere entertainment. It is honest and hard to ignore. Courtney is willing to share his innermost thoughts about trauma, addiction, and death.

Courtney puts his life on full display, leaving no trauma unturned, highlighting his haunting thoughts and sharing them as if you were his therapist.

Courtney is brave.

Welcome to Joy Road. This is Detroit.

Courtney will be dropping his highly anticipated album Microdose on Friday, May 17, with guest appearances from Royce Da 5’9″, Benny the Butcher, and Conway The Machine, just to name a few.
